Star Struck

I live for starry nights.

The stars at night are distant suns. Some are smaller than our Sun, others make it look like an ant in comparison. And there are more of them than there are grains of sand in all of the beaches on Earth. The moment I learned these is seared into my memory. I was inside a small inflatable planetarium lying down on the floor while staring at the projection on the dome. I remember the feeling of going out of the planetarium and knowing that I am not the same kid who went in.

I live for moments like that, moments when, after learning something new about the world, I cannot look at things the same way again. Even more, I cannot continue living the same way as before. Learning like this changes me. It gives me a better understanding of people, and in turn makes me act with more kindness towards them. It helps me make decisions that are better not just for me, knowing how choosing otherwise could cause more harm to the environment. It makes me smile more when I’m alone. That is why I believe in the power of such moments to change others. Given enough time, I think such moments can change the world.

Being part of BAFI has given me the opportunity to share such experiences with others. I am lucky to be working with a group of people who use creativity to give people learning experiences that make them better human beings and better citizens of the world. It is my hope that with MIND S-Cool as the digital parallel of The Mind Museum and the BGC Art Center, we can give people those learning moments that will be forever seared into their memories, changing them into more curious, more humane versions of themselves.
